Iran to Construct Railroad in Turkmenistan *** Iran's ambassador to Ashgabat said that Iranian contractors are due to implement a 600-million-dollar project of railroad construction linking Iran to Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. Mohammad Reza Forqani said that the railroad is 256 kilometers from Atrak-Barakat in Turkmenistan.
He added that a Memorandum of Understanding on providing financial credit for the project had been signed recently between Turkmen Minister of Railway Transport Deryaguly Muhammetguliev and Chairman of Islamic Development Bank Ahmad Muhammad Ali, the Islamic republic news agency reported.
Although the amount of allocated credit for the project has not been disclosed, but informed sources from IDB said that it is 120 million dollars.
Forqani expressed hope that by entering IDB into the project it can be implemented more rapidly.
He pointed out that implementing the project by Iranian contractors was upon an agreement between Iran and Turkmenistan presidents.
The primary agreement on construction railroad between Iran-Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan was signed between presidents of Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan in April 2007 in the city of Turkmenbashi and its final agreement was signed in a summit meeting in Tehran in September of the same year between the three presidents.
The total route of the railway is 900 kilometers, of which 700 kilometers would be in Turkmenistan, 90 kilometers in Iran and 210 kilometers in Kazakhstan. Source: Fars News Agency, Iran
