Traditional Lanj Building and Navigation in the Persian Gulf

Traditional Lanj Building and Navigation in the Persian Gulf
This knowledge, registered on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2011, is more than just a technical skill; it is a narrative of the thousand-year bond between Iranians and the sea.
Sailors and Lanj builders in ports such as "Kong" and "Laft" construct these massive wooden vessels without any written blueprints, relying solely on mental calculations and empirical knowledge passed down from father to son.
A significant part of this heritage is the work music at sea, or "Nema-khani," which helped sailors pull the sails or raise the anchor in a rhythmic harmony. Furthermore, traditional navigational knowledge, based on the position of stars and the color of the sea water, allowed Iranian captains to traverse the maritime Silk Road to the coasts of Africa and India without modern instruments.
