The Mythical Bird of Kazakhstan, Immortalized in the Bayterek Tower

The Mythical Bird of Kazakhstan, Immortalized in the Bayterek Tower
The legend of the Samruk bird and the Tree of Life has deep roots in the mythology of Central Asia, particularly among Turkic peoples, and outlines a very important cultural identity for Kazakhstan.
The Samruk (Самұрық) bird is a mythical creature (similar to the Simurgh in Persian culture) and a symbol of joy, fortune, and immortality. The legends state that the Samruk bird flies to the top of the Tree of Life (Bayterek) once a year and lays its Golden Egg there. This Golden Egg symbolizes the sun, life, and a bright future for future generations.
Bayterek (Бәйтерек) means "tall poplar tree" or the "Tree of Life/World." This immense tree symbolizes the connection of three worlds: its roots represent the Underworld (the realm of the dead/underground); its trunk, the Middle World (Earth and human life); and its leaves, the Upper World (heaven and paradise).
The design of the Bayterek Tower in Astana, Kazakhstan, is the physical embodiment of the Samruk legend, serving as a symbol of a new beginning, development, and the prosperity of the Kazakh nation.
The Bayterek Tower is the most famous city symbol and one of the main tourist attractions in Kazakhstan, showcasing a blend of modern architecture and ancient national legends. Construction of the tower began in 1997. It reaches a height of 105 meters and weighs over 1,000 tons. The massive metal base and column of the tower symbolize the Tree of Life (Bayterek), which is rooted in the past and soars towards the future. The glass and golden sphere at the top of the tower represents the Golden Egg of the Samruk bird of fortune, promising happiness and a bright future for the Kazakh nation. Inside the golden sphere, there is a circular wooden globe from which 17 petals radiate. These 17 petals are part of the tower's interior elements which, alongside the handprint cast of former President Nursultan Nazarbayev, symbolize national unity and emphasize Kazakhstan’s message of peace and cultural diversity. The top floor of the Bayterek Tower features an art gallery, a large aquarium, and an observation deck offering a vast, comprehensive, and stunning panoramic view of the modern architecture of Astana.
The Bayterek Tower is not just an architectural structure but a cultural statement by Kazakhstan, a successful blend of ancient traditions (the Tree of Life) and modern aspirations (the new capital and a bright future).
