Get to know some of the deserts of ECO member countries
The Lut Desert is Iran's first natural desert registered with UNESCO. This amazing attraction, which covers 10 percent of Iran, is known as one of the world's driest and hottest regions. In recent years, it has been the hottest place on Earth, with temperatures recorded at over 70.7 degrees Celsius. Approximately 70% of the Lut Desert is located in Kerman Province, and parts of this mysterious desert are still unknown.
The Karakum Desert (meaning black sand) is a desert in Central Asia and one of the largest sandy deserts in the world, covering about 70% of the area of Turkmenistan (350,000 square kilometers). The desert extends from the Aral Sea in the north to the Kop-Dag Mountains in the south, and from the Amu Darya River in the northeast to the Caspian Sea in the west. A huge gas field is located in the central Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan. Karakum is rich in oil and natural gas resources. The fiery crater called Hell's Gate is one of the remote but spectacular places in Karakum.
The Turan cold winter deserts, of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan are among the six most biodiverse places in Central Asia, and this transnational region includes fourteen sections found in the arid regions of the temperate zone of Central Asia between the Caspian Sea and the high Turan Mountains, and it appear to represent a model of ongoing ecological and biological processes that demonstrate the adaptation and survival of diverse flora and fauna in harsh and changing environmental conditions. The main objective of including these sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List was to promote international cooperation for the conservation of endangered plant and animal species in the region.
The Kyzylorda Desert, or Red Sands, is the eleventh largest desert in the world, located between Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and part of Turkmenistan. It covers an area of 298,000 square kilometers and is located between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers.
There are no deserts in Turkey and most of its areas are fertile. However, there are a few semi-desert areas such as Karapinar.
The Katpana Desert in Pakistan is the highest desert in the world, and sometimes it snows, and it is said that its temperature reaches minus 25 degrees in winter.
In Afghanistan ,we can mention the Khash Plain in Nimroz Province and the Marco Plain, which starts in the Nimroz Province and extends to the vicinity of Iran, and the largest uranium reserves are found in this plain. The Daghnamadi Plain , with an area of 3000 square kilometers , is located along the border of Afghanistan and Iran.
