Turkmenistan – following the dissolution of the Soviet Union – gained independence in 1991. Subsequently, on December 12, 1995, it was recognized by the United Nations as a permanently neutral state.
Neutrality Day in Turkmenistan is considered the second most important national event. It is noteworthy that December 12 also coincides with the International Day of Neutrality as well as International Students’ Day.
Every year on December 12, the Republic of Turkmenistan commemorates its policy of neutrality – a day that symbolizes its national identity and foreign policy.
In 2025, Turkmenistan attaches special significance to its National Neutrality Day, with extensive preparations underway. This is because the UN General Assembly has declared 2025 as the International Year of Peace and Trust.
This alignment has provided Turkmenistan with the opportunity to mark the 30th anniversary of its neutrality on a broad international scale, with the participation of representatives from various countries and international organizations.
Turkmenistan’s Programs for Neutrality Day 2025
1. The main celebration will take place in front of the Türkmeniň Ak Öý building, featuring concerts of traditional and modern Turkmen songs and dances.
2. Conferences, exhibitions, creative competitions, and educational events will be held in educational and cultural centers, public organizations, and production facilities, focusing on the role of neutrality in maintaining peace, stability, and global trust.
3. The international forum “Peace and Trust: Foundations of Global Stability”, organized under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be convened. Through this forum, Turkmenistan intends to convey the message to the world: “Neutrality is not withdrawal from conflicts, but active participation in building peace.”
The convening of this forum represents the emergence of a new model in international relations – one that places positive neutrality at the forefront of proposed solutions to the crises of the 21st century.
In this context, Turkmenistan will emphasize the principle that “Dialogue guarantees peace”, paving the way for peace and sustainable development.
The Role of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO)
Turkmenistan has identified the Economic Cooperation Organization as one of the most important invitees to this celebration, a presence that will complete the image of regional cooperation.
Concluding Note
In fact, it can be said that Turkmenistan envisions a fresh outlook in its foreign policy – one that, in the view of the ECO Cultural Institute, will further strengthen the country’s cultural ties with the Institute.
