Turkmenistan Declares 2026 as the Year of “Independent Neutral Turkmenistan – the Homeland of Purposeful Winged Horses”
Ashgabat, December 26, 2025 —
The Mejlis of Turkmenistan has officially declared 2026 as the Year of “Independent Neutral Turkmenistan – the Homeland of Purposeful Winged Horses.” The decision was adopted in the context of the International Year of Peace and Trust and on the eve of the 35th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence, reflecting the country’s commitment to peace, neutrality, and sustainable development.
The year 2025 has been marked by historic significance for Turkmenistan, including the 30th anniversary of permanent neutrality, widely celebrated across the country. These commemorations provided an opportunity to present to the international community the nation’s achievements and progress under the leadership of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, guided by the enduring principles of the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Hero-Arkadag.
The declaration of 2026 also coincides with the Year of the Horse according to the Eastern calendar, underscoring the profound symbolic and cultural significance of the Ahal-Teke horse, a national treasure and emblem of Turkmen identity. Renowned for their strength, elegance, and endurance, Ahal-Teke horses occupy a central place in Turkmen history and are proudly depicted on the State Emblem of Turkmenistan.
According to the resolution, naming 2026 reflects the country’s aspirations to further promote national sovereignty, independence, cultural heritage, and international prestige. It also aims to educate younger generations in the spirit of patriotism, pride, and respect for Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality and historical legacy.
The resolution was adopted taking into account proposals from public organizations, work collectives, and citizens across the country.
