The commemoration ceremony of Magtymguly Pyragy, the prominent poet and thinker of the ECO region, titled "Magtymguly Pyragy; The Voice of Unity and Cultural Renaissance," was held on June 17, 2026, hosted by the ECO Cultural Institute.
In this specialized session, which was attended by diplomatic officials, university professors, researchers, and enthusiasts of culture and literature, various dimensions of the unity-inspiring ideas of this renowned poet were examined.
Dr. Mohammad Hassan, President of the ECO Cultural Institute, while welcoming the guests in his speech, considered Magtymguly Pyragy a symbol of social awakening and solidarity, stating: "We have gathered today not only to speak about the literary status of this prominent poet but also to address his moral, human, and unity-inspiring ideas; ideas that, despite the passage of centuries, remain alive, inspiring, and guiding for human societies." He added that in today’s world, which faces challenges such as social divisions and moral crises, re-reading Magtymguly’s message is more important than ever.
In continuation of ceremony, H.E. Mr. Ylyas Gaipov, Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Tehran, while appreciating the holding of this event, considered Magtymguly one of the most prominent cultural figures and the initiator of a new era in classical literature. He stated that his poems have been transmitted from generation to generation, and his valuable collection of manuscripts has been inscribed in the UNESCO as the Memory of the World Register; furthermore, the works of this great Turkmen poet and mystic have been translated into various languages and published in different countries due to their rich content.
Dr. Sayfolloh Mullojon, Professor of History at the National University of Tajikistan, emphasized in his speech that Pyragy’s popularity transcends borders and his poems were known even during his lifetime. He added: "In addition to poetry, Pyragy was proficient in various sciences such as mysticism, philosophy, and astronomy, and the traces of the thoughts of poets such as Saadi, Hafez, and Khayyam are clearly visible in his works."
Mr. Ali Rahbar, Director of the Turkmen Culture and Art Institute, also regarded Magtymguly as among the "transnational figures" and "shared symbolic assets." He stated: "Magtymguly Pyragy stands at the intersection of three literary traditions: Persian, the Iranian-Islamic mystical heritage, and the rich culture of the Turkmen people, and re-reading his heritage is part of a long-term strategy for cultural interaction in the region."
In the final part of this session, moderated by Ms. Maryam Shayegan, in order to strengthen cultural cooperation, H.E. Mr. Ylyas Gaipov, Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Tehran, donated a collection of valuable works and books regarding Magtymguly Pyragy and Turkmen culture to the library of the ECO Cultural Institute.
