Kahramanmaraş Accepted into UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a “City of Literature”
Known as Vilayet-i Türkman during the Ottoman era, Kahramanmaraş has achieved a significant international milestone by becoming the first city from Türkiye to be admitted to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network with the title of “City of Literature.” This recognition officially acknowledges the city’s rich literary heritage and deep-rooted cultural legacy on a global scale.
This development contributes to the strengthening of Türkiye’s soft power by showcasing the international appeal of its cultural assets. It also demonstrates how cultural diplomacy can effectively promote local values and traditions beyond national borders. At the same time, the global recognition of Kahramanmaraş’s literary heritage highlights the growing importance of literary diplomacy as a means of fostering intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding.
Kahramanmaraş is closely associated with the renowned literary circle known as the “Seven Beautiful Men” (Yedi Güzel Adam), which includes Nuri Pakdil, Cahit Zarifoğlu, Erdem Bayazıt, Rasim Özdenören, Alâeddin Özdenören, Mehmet Akif İnan, and Ali Kutlay. The UNESCO designation is expected to create new opportunities for international literary cooperation and cultural exchange centered on the city’s distinguished intellectual tradition.
The UNESCO “City of Literature” title underscores not only the cultural richness of Kahramanmaraş but also its role as an important center of literature and culture that enhances Türkiye’s international visibility and cultural influence.
