ECI Holds Expert Panel on
'Theology of the Environment'
The eighth of ECI's series of scientific and literary expert panels were held on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at the diplomatic library of this international institution. Present at the panel were Dr. Mohammad Mehdi Mazaheri, ECI president, Dr. Seyyed Mostafa Mohaghegh Damad, representatives of Pakistan and Tajikistan, the Organization of Islamic Culture and Relations as well as directors and advisors of the ECI president in arts, culture and media affairs.

According to ECI public relations, at the beginning of the meeting Dr. Mazaheri discussed the issue of environment and the threats posed to the natural landscapes as one of the most important concerns of the age of globalization.
In his remarks, Dr. Mazaheri called for a shared responsible attitude towards the environment which requires a fresh outlook on the part of the societies to be realized through cooperation, understanding and global peace. He further noted: "I believe that the development and protection of environment will be realized through regional interaction and international cooperation and the environment diplomacy would be an effective approach for the conservation of natural resources."
Next, Dr. Seyyed Mostafa Mohaghegh Damad, expressed his gratitude towards Dr. Mazaheri for paying special attention to the safeguarding of the natural environment and talked about the direct and meaningful relation existing between different variables such as the sense of responsibility, environment ethics revival of religious values for the preservation of the environment.
Regarding the human interaction with nature in modern times, the head of the Department of Islamic Studies of the Iranian Academy of Sciences said: "During modern times, the humanistic approach, emphasizing the value and agency of human beings, have has prevailed over humanity, and human beings seek to shape and change the face of the environment according to their own intellect, will, and self-interest".
"In order to understand Islam's view of the environment, we must consider three points: God and His relation with the world, man and nature", he added.
Dr. Mohaghegh Damad further elaborated upon the five principles discussed in the holy Quran on nature including: 1) nature is God's creature; 2) world is God's mirror; 3) mankind is responsible for the protection of the earth; 4) the nature belongs to the entire human race; 5) destruction of plants and animals are forbidden.
