Iran commemorates Shahriar on International Day of Persian Poetry and Literature
With the cooperation of ECO Cultural Institute and the participation of Shahriar’s Mausoleum of Poets Cultural Foundation, the 6th International Day of Persian Poetry and Literature, as well as the commemoration ceremony of Mohammad-Hossein Shahriar, were held in Milad Tower, Tehran.
Commemoration of Mohammad-Hossein Shahriar was held on the International Day of Persian Poetry and Literature on September 18th at Milad Tower Conference Hall with the presence of Gholamali Haddad Adel, the Head of the Iranian Academy of Persian Language and Literature, Murodjon Buriboev, President of the ECO Cultural Institute, Gholam-Reza Montazeri, Deputy Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's Cultural Committee, Mahmoud Shalouie, the Head of the Association of Cultural Works and Honors of Iran and the Secretary of the Iranian Society for the Promotion of Persian Language and Literature, together with a great number of the Iranian professors, poets, writers, Shahriar scholars, and Ashiqlar artists.
At the beginning of the ceremony, Vand Nowruz, the Head of the Mausoleum of Poets Cultural Foundation, considered the timing to coincide Shahriar’s death anniversary with the Day of Persian Poetry and Literature as a remarkable gesture. Pointing out Shahriar's special place in the hearts of the people and his exceptional popularity, he requested the Islamic City Council of Tehran to speed up the process to approve the opening of the Shahriar House Museum.
Enumerating Shahriar’s outstanding moral qualities at the conference, Haddad Adel, the Head of the Iranian Academy of Persian Language and Literature, considered his poetry to be far from any complexity and appraised its language as clear and comprehensible. He called Shahriar one of the successful contemporary poets because his poetry is popular among people. Further, he stated that Shahriar is a zealous Iranian man who thought about Iran's independence and greatness above all else. Haddad Adel nudged everyone to remember his important role in national unity, and also considered him Iran's cultural ambassador in Turkish-speaking countries.
The Head of the Iranian Academy of Persian Language and Literature also mentioned another characteristic of this famous poet and said: “He is influential due to the fact that he used to write poetry during a period of time that there was a contradiction between modern and classical Persian poems in our country. This is while, many young people were attracted to modern poetry and they despised classical poetry, however, Shahriar himself was the proof that evinced that classical Persian poetry still survives and manifested that it is alive and will not dwindle.”
Murodjon Buriboev, President of the ECO Cultural Institute, also named Mohammad-Hossein Shahriar as one of the famous and distinguished poets not only in Iran but also in the region, who "shines like a bright star in the sky of poetry and literature and stays deeps in the hearts, especially with his sonnets expressing his tumultuous emotions". He added: "Shahriar's poetry is not only written in rhymes and has rhythm and melody, but it is also full of advice and eloquence, fluency and delicacy."
He also referred to Shahriar’s high status in the ECO member countries. He stated: "The Republic of Azerbaijan has published his poems many times and many commentaries have been written about them. In Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, many have read and liked his poems. In Tajikistan, Shahryar's poems have been translated and published many times, and famous singers have sung his sweet sonnets.”
Pointing out that the culture needs a strong force to transmit cultural concepts, Gholam-Reza Montazeri, Deputy Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's Cultural Committee, also said: “Literature is the best tool for this cultural transmission, which can connect us with our ancestors, through the Persian language and literature, which is the best choice for this transfer due to their characteristics. The appeal of the Persian language because of its beauty and elasticity can be an effective factor for its promotion. On the other hand, the vastness of the Persian language and literature has turned it into a colorful cultural cloth that everyone can benefit from.”
Designating that the Persian language is the second language of the Islamic world and the first language of Iranian culture and civilization, Montazeri added: “The fact that some Iranians dedicated their efforts to translating, correcting and writing literary works shows the importance of this language.” He further considered the publication and expansion of Persian literature on a national and international scale as well as moviemaking based on these valuable sources as a way forward.
Mahmoud Shalouie, the Head of the Iranian Association of Cultural Works and Honors of Iran and the Secretary of the Iranian Society for the Promotion of Persian Language and Literature, appraised Shahriar for being a pioneer in both Persian and Turkish sonnets and added that he was able to reach the heights of these two areas. He noted: “Also, Shahriar was able to reach the peak of mysticism and connect mysticism with poetry in the contemporary period. Shahriar is so important to us that the International Day of Persian Poetry and Literature coincides with his commemoration ceremony, and I hope that conditions will be provided for us to work as much as possible for the promotion and development of the Persian language and literature because the Persian language and literature are like a limpid river from which anyone from any part of the world can drink.”
During the conference, professors and poets, especially Ali Mousavi Garmarodi, Abdul Jabbar Kakai, Morteza Amiri Asfandagheh, and Seyed Mohsen Hosseini, passionately read poems, and the speakers unanimously agreed that Shahriar, the zealous Azeri poet, is not only one of the great cultural manifestations, but also the medium of national unity, and the connecting link between the Persian and Turkish poetries. Additionally, his famous and popular poems, “Ali Ey Homaye Rahmat”, which was written as a sign of his devotion to Imam Ali, and “Heydar-Babaya Salaam” (Hello to Heydar-Baba), were recited a lot.
Also, in this ceremony, professor Shahbazi was awarded the highest award of the Persian Language and Literature.
