Desert ecosystems of Turkmenistan are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List
The unique desert ecosystems of Turkmenistan “Bereketli Garagum” (Blessed Karakum), “Gaplangyr”, “Repetek” and “Yeraji” are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This decision was made during the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee, held in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia).
At the session, it was noted that the “Cold Winter Deserts of Turan” represent a model of continuous ecological and biological processes that determine the adaptation and survival of diverse flora and fauna in changing extreme environmental conditions. It was also emphasized that the inclusion of these sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List will allow countries to strengthen international cooperation for better conservation of all species of animals and plants that are globally endangered.
